History and Evolution of Film

According to the Science and Media Museum, there is no single person that invented cinema.  However, in 1891 the Edison Company successfully demonstrated a prototype of the Kinetoscope, which enabled one person at a time to view moving pictures.

At first, films were very short, sometimes only a few minutes or less. They were shown anywhere a screen could be set up and a room darkened. They were known as 'silent films', although they were not exactly silent. There were lectures or music in the background. Slowly, films became longer and the storytelling became the dominant form.

As more and more people paid to watch these films, the film industry grew and more bills were spent on research and evolution of cinema. Soon synchronized audio and colour was added to the films to make them more interesting and eye catching.

Since film industry has now become a multi-billion pound industry, more and more research is being put into film making each day in order to create media texts that are better than the ones produced before.
