History and Evolution of Film

According to the Science and Media Museum, there is no single person that invented cinema.  However, in 1891 the Edison Company successfully demonstrated a prototype of the Kinetoscope, which enabled one person at a time to view moving pictures.  Kinetoscope At first, films were very short, sometimes only a few minutes or less. They were shown anywhere a screen could be set up and a room darkened. They were known as 'silent films', although they were not exactly silent. There were lectures or music in the background. Slowly, films became longer and the storytelling became the dominant form.  As more and more people paid to watch these films, the film industry grew and more bills were spent on research and evolution of cinema. Soon synchronized audio and colour was added to the films to make them more interesting and eye catching.  Since film industry has now become a multi-billion pound industry, more and more research is being put into film making each d...

What is a Film Opening?

A film opening is the film sequence played at the beginning of the film. It is the foundation of the whole film since it sets the mood of the audience as the genre may be revealed during this part of the film. The soundtrack may also be played along with the film title in order to reveal more about the film. It usually shows the audience what exactly is happening before the main plot of the film begins. Hence, it must contain a believable narrative along with an understandable setting of the scenes.  In order to produce a cinematic and strong film opening, the director should make sure that it includes : the introduction of characters establishment of the location unfolding of narrative creation of enigma conventional title for the film The main purpose of a film opening is to grab the audience's attention ; therefore, it must consist of suspense which can only be obtained if the director works on the above mentioned details.

Favourite Film Openings

Over the course of these four months that I have studied media, I have come to understand and interpret the media language whenever I watch any film. Personally, I have started to develop more interest in movies because now I can read the signs and understand the purpose. My interest has enormously shifted towards film openings. Most times I don't find enough time to watch a full movie which is why I watch its opening and that gives me a whole overview of the movie. One of my all time favourite film openings is the one of the film, 'The Da Vinci Code'. I found the film opening so attention grabbing that I ended up watching the whole movie and if I had the chance to I would watch it again. The movie is based on Dan Brown's famous book, 'The Da Vinci Code'. The film has been an inspiration to me. I would have created  a film opening of the same genre for my Media Studies task but since all my team members have agreed to create a film opening of a horror genre and...

My team includes 4 members.  Hashir Zeeshan (cameraman and in charge of mise-en-scene) Azwa Ameer (director and in charge of props) Abdul Hannan (editor and in charge of sound) Omama Basit (me) (director and in charge of lighting)

Coursework Set Brief

Candidates taking Media Studies in A levels have to complete a specific task each year. The first year requires them to create a film opening sequence of no longer than 2:30 minutes. This sequence is to be created along with the group members who in turn are to be assigned specific roles e.g director, cameraman, head of editing etc. These members work on their assigned tasks to create a final product that will award each member with the grade that their task deserves.  A range of genres can be chosen for the film opening including action, thriller, science fiction etc. However, it is to be kept in mind that nothing vulgar is shown. More importantly as the openings reveal the big idea of the whole film they should be made in such a way that they grab the audience's attention.  Traditionally, a film opening should include the types of characters a recognizable setting an understandable style a conventional narrative
